For beginners in SEO, the above definition may sound complicated. In simpler terms, search engine optimization is a way to improve your website so that it appears closer to the top positions in the search results of Google, Yahoo, Bing or other search engines.

When you perform a Google search, the order in which the returned results are displayed is based on complex algorithms. These algorithms (also known as search engine ranking algorithms), take into account a number of factors before deciding which web page will be displayed first, second, etc.

Optimizing your website for search engines will give you an advantage over non-optimized sites and increase your chances of getting a higher rank.

As I mentioned above, SEO is not a static process but a framework with rules and processes.

SEO on the site: rules to apply on your site and content to be compatible with search engines

SEO off site: ways to promote your website or blog so you can get better results in the search results.

Technical SEO

The 1st stage in SEO process is called technical SEO. As the name implies, technical SEO has nothing to do with the actual content of a website or with the methods of website promotion.

It has to do with the configuration that you must configure to facilitate the work of search engine crawlers. Usually, once you get your correct technical SEO, you may not have to deal with it again.

On-site SEO

The second stage is On-Page SEO. The SEO on the page has to do mainly with the content and other elements that are on a page.

Unlike technical and off-page SEO, the main focus of SEO on the page is to provide signals to search engine crawlers so they can understand the meaning and context of their content.

Remember that search engines do not read a page like a human being, so they are looking for signs to discover what a page is about. At this stage you will discuss the structure of the website, keywords, title optimizations, headers, internal links, image SEO, structured data markup and other techniques that can send the right signals to the search engines.

Off-site SEO

The third stage is Off-Page SEO. In addition to the changes you can make on your website (SEO on the site) to be placed in a higher place in the SERP, the other way to improve the ranking position of your website is through the use of SEO techniques off the site.

SEO outside the site is generally known as link building, but I prefer to use the term website promotion, since a proper way to promote a website involves much more methods and techniques than the creation of links.

Why is SEO important outside the page?

In general, when a user types a search query, search engine algorithms analyze their index and try to find the best pages that can satisfy the user’s intention. Pages that are good candidates appear in the top positions of the search results. One of the factors to determine the position of a web page in the results is the number of inbound links (backlinks).

The links are a sign of trust and, depending on where the links come from, they can significantly affect your position in the ranking. If the links come from well known and trusted sites, their classification will be positively affected.

If it is about paid links, links in article directories, link farms or as a result of an exchange, your ranking will be negatively affected. Getting links in this way is a violation of Google’s guidelines and most likely will also result in a Google penalty.
